Travel From Medan To Lake Toba

travel from medan to lake toba
Sumatra, Indonesia travel budget?

Hello everybody,

I am planning on going to Indonesia for three weeks over the Christmas period and am having trouble making a budget.

I have looked at a number of different websites and they are either outdated or just advertise accommodation. The generally quoted figure is about US$20 per day per person. Is this figure accurate? I will be traveling with my girlfriend.

I know that it is a big question but can you please let me know approximately:

How much for food per day (2 persons)
How much for reasonable budget accommodation per night
Bus from Medan to Bukit lawang / lake toba
Surprise payments (visa on arrival and stuff like that)

Any ideas on jungle trekking or hiking to the top of a volcano or anything else that you think that a traveler to Sumatra should know? I know that it is monsoon season…

Thank you for your answers I really do appreciate it

40 $ for two persons a day would be easily enough.

for one person:
-breakfast 0$ (included in the room rental)
-lunch 2$
- dinner 3$

budget accomodation 4$ (for two people)

buses about 8$ for a long distance ride

visa on arrival (30 days) 25 $. departure fee 15$

the people in indonesia can be stressful.

Lake Toba and Samosir Island
“This is my 4th times journey on Lake Toba (Indonesian people usual call it Danau Toba). Every time I went to Lake Toba and also to Samosir Island, I always so enjoy it. In this journey I had to go with my best friend and her mom. We flight from Banda Aceh to Medan in the morning, after that we have rent car from Polonia, Medan Airport and go to Parapat, the town so close with Lake Toba. We need more than 4 hours by car to get our destination, Lake Toba. In Tiga Raja harbour we take ferry to Samosir Island, they have two destination for some ferries, to go to Tomok Village or Tuk Tuk Village in Samosir Island. We choose to go to Tuk Tuk because at that place they have many choices for hotel and homestay, prefer that Tomok. So please don’ forget to tell the ferryman the name of place which you will be stay, he will drop you off at the nearest quay. So we droped at Romlan’s, one of my favorite homestay at Toba. After we rest one night at this homestay without do nothing, just saw beautiful lake overview, in early morning we have continue our trip. It’s not easy to get some rent car ini here, if you get it, the price sometimes so expensive. You can rent motorbike or bycicle in this place and that prefer than rent a car. Biking to Tomok, 6 km from Tuk-Tuk, we can saw stone sarcopagus of Raja Sidabutar, the chief of the first tribe to migrate to this Island. In Tomok wen can also bought some Batak’s souvenirs. The handy crafts market could found in this area, although the products was not on best quality.”
