Batam Stories

Will this Papua tsunami affect Batam?
I am going to go to Batam, Indonesia in a few days’ time. And there, three powerful earthquakes have struck Indonesia within half an hour of each other. This caused a tsunami in the Papua province of Indonesia. This tsunami has struck the Central Singapore, resulting in a flood. My question is that will this affect Batam? I am going to Batam from Singapore via ferry.

The short answer is no. Papua is quite a long way from Singapore and Batam. There must be thousands of islands between them.
The floods in Singapore were not caused by a tsunami.

B.A.T.A.M. tells the contrasting stories of two women: Wati, a young factory worker, and Dewi, a prostitute, both of whom live through a dramatic transformation on the Indonesian island of Batam, located on Singapore’s doorstep. In this free-trade zone, an official economy based in the factories, and an unofficial economy of prostitution, have developed together, increasing Batam’s population from 3,000 to 700,000. As the two divergent economies depend on female labor, the experiences of these two women illuminate the ways in which multinational capitalism and migration interact in the shadowlands of globalization.

Sweet Thursday (Classic, 20th-Century, Penguin) $5.49 In Monterey, on the California Coast, Sweet Thursday is what they call the day after Lousy Wednesday, which is one of those days that’s just naturally bad. The book is in many ways a statement about Steinbeck’s great… |
