This post is a follow-up to one titled Flight from Kupang to Darwin that published back on December 5, 2011, with very little information within it whatsoever. In my weak defence, I had used an automated blogging software called WPMage (WordPress Mage) to create, schedule, and publish the post, but I never reviewed the result until today.
And that is why I am making a successor post.
Despite today’s post’s title, I am not going to strictly limit myself to offering articles and travelogues involving air travel from Kupang (Indonesia) to Darwin (Australia). Rather, you will find just about anything involving travel between these two points ─ and in either direction. So feel free to cherry-pick amongst what follow. My intention has been solely to try to entertain and inform.
Any references to search engines are for sample purposes only. I have not included them as recommendations ─ their presence is entirely arbitrary.
Finally, I wish to point out that travelers actually flying from Kupang to Darwin seem not to be a loquacious lot ─ I cam across very little current mention of the trip. This is why there are so many older references to it.
And with that said…I hope you find something here to make your visit worthwhile.

Ngurah Rai International Airport
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ngurah Rai International Airport (IATA: DPS, ICAO: WADD), also known as Denpasar International Airport, is located in southern Bali, 13 km south of Denpasar. Ngurah Rai is currently (pending the construction of new terminal facilities) the third most crowded airport in the country after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Juanda International Airport.
The airport is named after I Gusti Ngurah Rai, an Indonesian republican who died on 20 November 1946 in a puputan (fight to the death) against the Dutch at Marga in Tabanan where the Dutch defeated his company with air support, killing Rai and 95 others during the Indonesian Revolution in 1946.

On April the 28th at 11am 2011 British paraplegic pilot Dave Sykes set off on an epic solo, record breaking microlight journey from York, England to Sydney, Australia to celebrate 81 years since Amy Johnson became the first woman to fly solo to Australia.
This challenging feat of aviation saw see Dave Sykes pass through 19 different countries, and fly over 11,600 Nautical Miles. Flying over incredibly hostile terrain along with long sea crossings and deserts, while also encountering testing meteorological conditions on the way.
As well as having to struggle with the day to day aspects that being in a wheelchair brought along, Dave Sykes is now the first paraplegic to fly from York to Sydney in a microlight ever.

Flight of The Red Dog (Amazon U.S.)
Flight of the Red Dog (Amazon U.K.)
The book is a fact-based, fictionalized story of two aviators doing espionage work for US and British intelligence agencies in 1939. Their around-the-world mission is predicated on geodetic survey. The times are poignant, while both the Nazis and Japanese are seeking world domination. The pilots are seeking evidence of world conquering avarice, and they find it through energy and oil-seeking efforts of the Axis powers. Neither the Nazis nor Japanese can know the truth of the pilots’ mission, or else troubles will follow. Throughout the book, the pilots must avoid disclosure and its grim consequences or death from exceedingly dangerous flying conditions to include flak.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding between Indonesia and Australia, traditional Indonesian fishermen are permitted access to fish in a designated area inside the 200 nautical mile Australian Fishing Zone (AFZ). However, crew and vessels are regularly apprehended for illegal fishing activity outside the permitted areas and, after prosecution in Australian courts, their boats and equipment are destroyed and the fishermen repatriated to Indonesia. This is an ethnographic study of one group of Indonesian maritime people who operate in the AFZ. It concerns Bajo people who originate from villages in the Tukang Besi Islands, Southeast Sulawesi. It explores the social, cultural, economic and historic conditions which underpin Bajo sailing and fishing voyages in the AFZ. It also examines issues concerning Australian maritime expansion and Australian government policies, treatment and understanding of Bajo fishing. The study considers the concept of “traditional” fishing regulating access to the MOU area based on use of unchanging technology, and consequences arising from adherence to such a view of “traditional”; the effect of Australian maritime expansion on Bajo fishing activity; the effectiveness of policy in providing for fishing rights and stopping illegal activity, and why Bajo continue to fish in the AFZ despite a range of ongoing restrictions on their activity.
