I live in Chonburi and am flying to Chiang Mai from Bangkok any other tips?
A The Chiang Mai airport is in CM – so, depending on where you might be going, it may not be too far, but either way, it is not far. It should not be more than abt a 15 minute drive to the center of town. I do not know how they work things but if it were a Bkk metered taxi, it would likely be not more than 100 baht – but since it is the airport and likely no meters, you might be paying close to 200 baht, depending on day or night. There likely will be tuk tuks there too – – but, why not contact your hotel and ask. They may even have pick-up service.
Sunday Night Walking Street Market might be some of the most original shopping you can do in Thailand w/lots of independent craft people selling their wares.
I am performing an edit to this post, and will be commencing it on April 11, 2017. I expect to be working on it for the next 10 days or so, so pay no attention to the publication date ─ I seem unable to amend that.
By the way, that ‘Q & A’ session just above is from back in 2011, I believe; so it would be surprising if speculated baht prices have not changed since then.
As for what follows, if Chiang Mai does indeed hold your interest and that is why you have come to this post, I think that you will likely be spending quite some time browsing the numerous wide-ranging references.

Thailand News: Turning Point: Family status of migrants from Shan State and Thai citizenship policy: Pongpan Chumjai What are the dreams of families who migrated from Shan State and currently reside in Thailand? Many families hope to be reunited with family members in their home country; but there are many families who hope to begin new lives here, in Thailand. While Shan children have been growing up in Thai society and feel that Thailand is their home, how should the Thai policies on citizenship and the status of stateless people be adjusted to the needs of this cross-border population? These issues are addressed in the following report. For many decades, many Shan people have decided to cross the border to northern Thailand where they used their skills and hard work to earn a living and support their families. They consider Thailand as their second home. The young generation has attentively and devotedly studied in the Thai education system and hopes to repay society; but the rights to residence and citizenship are still restricted. When she retired, Carole Howard took a surprising – some might call it radical – giant step out of her comfort zone. With little idea of what to expect, she overcame her usual risk-aversion and volunteered with her husband to be management consultants for a non-profit in Senegal, West Africa. The experience was so life-affirming they did it again the following year in Uganda. And then three more times after that, in Namibia, Thailand, and Ghana, each time for two months. Her adventure was simultaneously an outward journey (of miles and cultures) and an inward journey (of small victories and self-discovery). While she knew she couldn’t save the world, she found that doing one thing for one person or organization in one place is the next best thing. With the northern mountains covered in verdant jungle and sprinkled with age-old hill tribes, elephant camps, and ancient ruins, it is no wonder that the North is becoming an unforgettable experience for travelers. Laid back cities like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai offer a burgeoning restaurant and nightlife scene that provides the perfect respite after experiencing the natural beauty of Northern Thailand.
T. F. Rhoden has spent seven years exploring this fascinating country. First as a graduate student, then as a Peace Corps volunteer, and finally as an aid worker on the Thai-Burma border. Through his unique experiences, Rhoden provides insight into the country that has become his second home. With a comprehensive background section covering the history, culture, and logistics of travel, and sixteen sections dedicated to each stop on his recommended travel route, this book will allow travelers to feel like locals while enjoying the indisputable beauty that the North has to offer.

Ban Dong is our village, it’s my second home. Over the brow of that small hill and in among the palms and bamboo trees is our house. It an idyllic real working Thai mountain village. The nearest city is that of Chiang Mai which is a good two and a half hour drive north, an hour and a half of which is a winding, dipping, rising, switchback mountain road. I love this village.
