Programming

Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House were darkened during Earth Hour 2007.

Before 2008, San Francisco had been running his own "Lights Out" program in October. In 2008 he moved to March 29 to align with Earth Hour Australia. This also happened to be the year that Earth Hour has become in an international event and San Francisco was invited to be a member of the city in Earth Hour. Instead of having a competitive event, San Francisco decided to support Earth Hour and all the lights out efforts have moved to support the International Earth Hour event. Since Earth Hour 2008 was a Saturday, many high schools in the Toronto metropolitan area participated by turning off half the lights in the classrooms during the last hours of school on Friday, April 28, 2008. Although the theme of Earth Hour 2008 has been officially "See the difference it can make," concluded the official radio ad with the slogan, "Dark City, a brilliant idea."

Many buildings in Sydney turned off their lights also in 2007.

Tel Aviv scheduled to Earth Hour on Thursday March 27, 2008 to avoid conflict with the Sabbath. Dublin moved their Earth Hour between 9 and 10 pm due to its geographical location in the north.

Energy Saving

According to WWF Thailand, Bangkok declined electricity consumption of 73.34 megawatts, which, more than an hour, equivalent to 41.6 tons of carbon dioxide. The Bangkok Post gave different figures of 165 megawatt hours and 102 tons of carbon dioxide. This was observed to be significantly smaller than a similar campaign initiated by Hall of Bangkok, the city last year, in May at 530 megawatt-hours were saved and 143 tons of carbon dioxide emissions are reduced.

The Philippines noted the electricity market in the Philippines Corp. that the power consumption is reduced by about 78.63 megawatts Metro Manila, and up to 102.2 megawatts on the island of Luzon. The drop in peak demand of around 39 MW 8:14 pm experienced in Metro Manila and about 116 MW at 8:34 pm in the network of Luzon …

Toronto saved 900 megawatt hours of electricity. 8.7% was saved when compared with a typical night in March, Saturday.

Ireland as a whole, had a reduction in electricity use of about 1.5% for the night. In the three-hour period 18:30 to 21:30 there was a reduction of 50 megawatts, saving 150 megawatt hours, or about 6 tons of carbon dioxide carbon. This saved less than a carbon output of Ireland people for a whole year.

In Dubai, where he became external lighting at various monuments and main lighting in selected areas was dimmed by 50%, the Electricity and Water Authority reported a savings of 100 megawatt hours of electricity. This represented a decrease of 2.4% demand compared to before time began.

The Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand, turned off the light standard at the Time Earth and re-ignite.

The best result was in Christchurch, New Zealand. The city recorded a 13% drop in demand electricity. However, Transpower reported that energy consumption in New Zealand during Earth Hour was 335 megawatts higher than the average of 328 megawatts of last two Saturdays. Melbourne, Australia saved 10.1% of electricity. Sydney, being the city that have participated in both 2007 and 2008, Earth Hour, cutting 8.4% electricity consumption. This is less than 10.2% last year, but the executive director of Earth Hour Andy Ridley made the statement that after factoring margin of error, the participation in this city is the same as last year.

The worst result of Calgary, Canada. Energy consumption in the city was actually 3.6% in the peak hour demand for electricity. In Calgary, however, where weather plays a major role in energy consumption, cold weather the city experienced 12C temperature recorded the previous Saturday.

Celebrations around the world

Nelly Furtado held a free concert Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto to celebrate Earth Hour.

In Toronto, Ontario, York University, student-led education programs Environmental team ran an hour in the afternoon briefing Earth, and the York University Observatory held a public meeting of extra vision.

The activities of observing the stars were held in Toronto Ontario Science Centre David Dunlap Observatory Richmond Hill.

Astronomy Ireland set up high-powered telescopes at the Phoenix Park in Dublin to allow people to take advantage of the night sky, usually flooded by lights bright city.

In Tel Aviv, Israel, a free concert was held in Hasekhel Knesiyat Rabin Square. Energy needed for the concert was generated by a group of cyclists pedal pushing generators. The remaining power was supplied by the generator fuel oil used for power falafel.

Google

Earth Hour has also received free advertising from the Google corporation. From 12:00 am March 29, 2008 until the end of Earth Hour, the front page of Google in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland and the UK became on a black background. Their motto is: "We have the lights out Now it's your turn -.. Earth Hour" However, Google said in 2009 that not turn the page black again because of the confusion that caused many users. A common mistake is to have a black background on a Web page reduces energy consumption monitors, LCD monitors use a constant amount of energy regardless of the colors shown. This is not the case of organic LED monitors, although not currently in popular use.

TV Channels

Earth Hour was extensively covered in the United States with segments of Oprah, NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, CNN International, The Weather Channel and more. Several stations across the United United launched their coverage, including NBC in Atlanta, who made an Hour Earth Hour long special during the event. [Citation needed]

Canada The Weather Network moved their studies outside between 8 and 9 pm ET Earth Hour, with only one LED light for the time.

The agenda Steve Paikin on TVOntario with continued its full program runs only in candlelight.

Earth Hour 2007

Earth Hour was held on March 31 in Sydney, Australia at 7:30 pm local time.

Overview Sydney Earth Hour 2008

The measuring the reduction in electricity consumption

As the numbers of EnergyAustralia, a local utility, the consumption of electricity for the 2007 event in Sydney was 2% lower over time than would be expected given the time, weather conditions and the past patterns of four years. [Citation required] The Sun Herald equate this with "taking 48,613 cars off the road for 1 hour." Critics, particularly columnist Andrew Bolt, labeling it as "a cut so small is trivial – equal to taking six cars off the road for a year." In context, the six cars is equivalent to less six cars on the road at any given time in the day or night. In response to these criticisms, the organizers of the anti-Earth Hour "If the reduction of greenhouse effect achieved in central Sydney during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year. "And Also note that the main goal of Earth Hour is to raise awareness about climate change issues and "to express that individual action a large scale can help change our planet for the better. "And not on specific energy reduction, made at the time to get everything you need.

The 10.2% figure [clarify] was questioned by David Solomon, a finance student at the University of Chicago. Without citing sources or methods of data analysis who claims to have used, Solomon says he used eight years of data from use of electricity to the conclusion that Earth Hour inspired fall was 6.33%, and after other possible factors were taken into account, 2.10%, "statistically indistinguishable from zero." In some areas in the hemisphere north, is the twilight at 8 pm, removing some of the benefits of the event.

Fairfax Media Coverage

Media Watch a television press scrutiny, reported on claims that Fairfax publications The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age had been misleading and even manipulate photographs of the event. The program shows before and after photos from our newspapers and offers photo comments that may or may not have been handled by overexposure or taking "before" image first 2 days, as many companies shut their lights all night, which prevents a proper comparison before and after shot in the night.

The Australian, a media competition, said journalists in the Age newspaper Melbourne, said they had been pressured not to write negative stories about Earth Hour, because of the sponsorship agreement of the parent company. The Australian came to say that the April 10, a statement of the journalists said: "Reporters were pressured not to write negative stories and themes of the story of a time prepared by the organizers of Earth Hour. "

Criticism

San Mateo, California is an example of a community that did not adhere the largely symbolic nature of Earth Hour in any way a large scale.

Criticisms of Earth Hour are:

The Christian Science Monitor said that most candles are made of paraffin, a petroleum heavy oil, a fossil fuel and, depending how many candles burning a person (if using candles source of Earth Hour), or rarely use compact fluorescent bulbs, and energy used to produce electricity, in some cases, replacing bulbs candles cause an increase, rather than a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions.

An alternative celebration of "The Time of human achievement" was sponsored by the libertarian think tank the Competitive Enterprise Institute to celebrate the progress of prosperity human. Participants in this event were asked to "celebrate the achievements of mankind, such as eating dinner, watching a movie, turning, keeping heat in your house. "

The Ayn Rand Institute wrote: "Participants spend an enjoyable sixty minutes in the dark, with the certainty that the benefits of saving the life of the industrial civilization is only a light switch away … Forget just a miserable time with the lights off. What is Earth Month … Try to spend a month, shivering in the dark, without heat, electricity, refrigeration, no power plants or generators, none of the labor-saving, time saving, and thus save the life of the products that industrial energy makes possible. "

Although in support of Earth Hour, the "Carbon Sense Coalition" Earth Hour wants the name "Night Blackout," to be held in the air free shortest day and the coldest year "… to prepare our people in the dark days ahead."

Björn Lomborg, author of The Skeptical Environmentalist, wrote: "It is vital for the new solar technology and more expensive than fossil fuels quickly so we can turn the carbon sources of energy for much longer than an hour and keep the planet running … fossil fuels, literally gave us an illumination light of our world and gives us protection from the fury of the elements. Ironically, the pure symbolism of today traces back to a dark age. "
