So I am travelling to Thailand, and I want to fly into Chiang Mai, but depart from most likely Ko Samui. How can I go about this? Or do I just have to buy a ticket to Bangkok, then fly to each place? This is all using expedia. Thanks!
Forget about flying internationally out of Chiang Mai or Ko Samui, international flights from either location are very limited and will likely cost much more than flying in and out of Bangkok and booking separate flights to Ko Samui and Chiang Mai from Bangkok.
You should be able to find competitive, low cost flights to Chiang Mai from Bangkok. Check Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and Air Asia for flights to Chiang Mai from Bangkok. From Bangkok to Ko Samui, only Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways fly that route.
Bangkok Airways owns the Samui Airport and operates a virtual monopoly on that route. Another option, is to fly a budget airline such as Air Asia from Bangkok to Surat Thani, and ferry or boat from near the Surat Thani Airport to Samui.
Both Samui and Chiang Mai are only about an hour by air from Bangkok and it’s easy enough to book a flight when you depart Samui or Chiang Mai back to Bangkok and connect with whatever airline you use to get in and out of Bangkok. Be careful of baggage allowance differences between your flight in and out of Bangkok and internal flights within Thailand, especially if you book any flights on Air Asia.
Btw, Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways are very good full service airlines, but can be much higher in price than the budget, no-frills Air Asia.
