A tour by hands
MANILA, Philippines — It was 6:00 a.m. on a Thursday morning and no daylight in sight. Several tour buses line the side street in front of a school creating small traffic jams in the two-lane road. Students arriving one after another, running towards the school gate with full backpacks and smiles on their faces. It was obviously field trip day. This is a scene that any former elementary or high school student may remember.
But this was no ordinary field trip day because this was a very special trip for very special children. In its 103 years of existence, it was the first time students of the Philippine School for the Deaf (PSD) in Pasay City went on an educational tour.
“Some students even arrived as early as 4:00 a.m.!” says Cristina Caluza, mother of a 14-year-old grade six elementary student of PSD. “Everyone is very excited. My son couldn’t even sleep last night.”
PSD is a public school and they cannot afford field trips like this. But because of the efforts of its Parents-Teacher Association and the Sign Language Tours Philippines (SLTP), they have organized the first ever sign language tour in the country and probably in Asia.
Almost 500 students of PSD — from elementary to high school — joined the field trip. The tour to Tagaytay was bound to be their most memorable adventure yet. [More….]
