I am leaving the article here as a point of shame to whomever claims to have written it. It will be interesting to see if the article is removed as I had requested it be. If you find that the link above does not take you directly to it, then perhaps I was successful in its recall.

“Today we were leaving the Malaysian Peninsular for the island of Borneo. Borneo is in fact divided administratively into three – the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, the Sultanate of Brunei and the Indonesian province of Kalimantan.
We were taken to KL airport which is actually situated 50km outside KL by an incredibly knowledgeable driver. He told us that the airport was shaped like a lotus flower and that they had transplanted a whole piece of rainforest, roots and all into the satellite building. On our trip to the airport we travelled past a superstar or 7 star hotel complex – well out of our price range that had been opened by the queen. We also passed by many palm oil plantations the new scourge of Malaysia and he told us that people were being made incredibly rich allowing their land to be used for planting. New building projects were particularly plentiful many of them were for luxury apartments. We also passed a Memorial Park a stark reminder of the Japanese occupation where mass graves were filled with both Muslims and Christians
The Air Malaysian flight to Kuching was a bumpy one and as we went to take off the heavens opened and the rain fell. It is said that it rains every day in KL and I was ready to believe them. I wasn’t so ready to believe we could take off in such weather but we did to my relief and soon we were on our way to Borneo. Incredibly we had to fill out an immigration form to enter the state of Sarawak even though we were still in Malaysia, apparently Malaysians outside the state are only allowed to stay two weeks and are not wanted.
We met our guide Tommy from Borneo Experience and he took us to the Kuching Hilton where we would spend that night – one of the many different beds we would have on the tour. There were great views over the Sarawak River from our hotel room. Kuching translates into cat in Malay and is often referred to as Cat City but know one seems to know why. The city even has two mayors one for the north and one for the south of the city.
The afternoon consisted of a quick tour of the city. The first stop was the Taoist temple Tua Pek Kong, that was built over a hundred years ago. Then it was a visit to the Sarawak Museum. It contained a lot of information and relics from Sarawak’s past including some interesting photographs and artifacts from the diverse tribes of the area . There was also models of the different types of longhouses and even a mock up of one. The ground floor of the museum held a natural history collection of the various flora and fauna of the region.
We then took a trip through the Muslim quarter where the houses were very nice and it appeared a wealthy area. Then through the Chinese quarter of the city. A visit to the fish and vegetable market was an interesting one with some of the biggest bananas I had ever seen. There was also lots of hanging plastic bags of various liquids and seeds although what they were I wasn’t sure. There were also piles of indigenous fruits and vegetables, some that I could name and others I am sure I had never seen before.
Tommy told us that the police only worked 9 -5 and that it was up to volunteers like himself to work the night shift. Any troublesome youngsters were shipped to juvenile detention centres where they would be held for up to four years and taught a trade.
